Democracy has been a failure since its introduction, and it's been getting worse on all measures since. It's also deeply unpopular. That's what populism is, the popular response to democracy. 'The people' never run societies. Or even any groups within those societies. All human life and change is led, by a tiny proportion of people. All social/political systems are 'authoritarian'. All aspects of human life are. It's all a fight for status.
