The Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica is also called The Doomsday Glacier, because of the dire implications of it melting. It’s about the size of the UK. One of the icebergs (B22a) which has been holding the glacier in place, stopping it collapsing and sliding into the sea, has now broken free. And all the other systems holding the glacier in place are collapsing at the same time. If Thwaites Glacier now collapses as well, it could release the West Antarctic ice sheet into the sea. If that happens global seal levels would rise by 3m. That would destroy all coastal cities. This is also happening much, much faster than previously predicted.
