AI is not some super-intelligence rival to humans. (What humans call intelligence is mostly just imitation.) Nor is it just unthinking statistical word patterns. AI is what happens when engineers test the abstractions about thinking against reality. It makes thought and consciousness intelligible, and workable. Just as Darwin took the abstract concept of ‘life’ and made it intelligible and workable.
