I strongly agree with this. I’m on social media because that’s where people are. But I think it’s destroying societies, and at great speed. And it’s not hard to understand why. Human communication and information has always in history been mediated by some form of institutional framework. A framework set up over generations, to test claims, to apply value filters etc. Social media strips all of that away and makes everything equivalent. The most stupid and vile things suddenly have a global home, completely decoupled from generations of expertise and experience.
