The word 'scientist' was invented in 1833. Before that time there were just scholars, who studied across the whole curriculum. The closest thing to what we see as 'science' today was natural philosophy. It's been alarming to me to see how narrowly experts are now trained, how 'scholarship' has come to just mean 'reading the literature'. That's not scholarship.
