John Thaw, as Inspector Morse, stating the often unspoken truth of our great housing market democracies. Roads and cars enslave us, and houses even more so. We’ve ‘economised’ all the basics of life, turned them into markets. It’s not us who benefits. “What sort of life do we offer our young people? School; if you’re lucky, college, then marriage. A ‘starter home’. Then children. A two-bedroom semi. If you do well, you’ve just about got to 4 bedrooms when your kids leave to buy starter homes of their own. This British home-owning democracy we’re all so proud of - it’s really a form of slavery. Man was born free, but everywhere he’s in the property chain.”
