Bit of Henri Bergson magic. Bergson pointed out that space and time aren’t two separate things, they define each other. For example, something ‘far away’ is space, right? No, said Bergson, it’s also time, because it’s a measure of how long it would take us to reach the thing we think is far away. That’s what ‘far away’ means - how long it would take us to get there. Another way to look at cars, they’ve destroyed our towns and cities because they’ve made all places equally accessible from all other places. Which gives us less reason to invest in making any particular place special, because we can go to any place we want, whenever we want. We’re a culture of no-place, one of the great new problems is where to park all the cars each household now has. We prioritise being anywhere over being somewhere.
