I spend a lot of time thinking about outrage. Think I'm getting closer. Humans desire hierarchy, and they should - a scale of value. At the same time they set up 'open democracies' where (supposedly) everything is equal. Those two desires are fundamentally contradictory, outrage occurs when they collide. Strip away tradition (hierarchy) and you get tabloid outrage as a substitute.
