Observe the culture we live in, and you will always find status driving nearly everything that happens. Whether it’s homes, food, cars, watches, or whatever, there’s an increasing push towards high-status luxury or ‘premium’ items. These status games proliferate when there isn’t a central status hierarchy focused on the public good. Like Victorian England had, with its focus on public works. Without that top-level status game targeted at what society collectively needs, individuals turn every part of their lives into their own separate status games.
