Towns and cities are a remarkable invention. Humans didn’t invent them, or even create them. Wtf, hey? Surely humans create towns and cities? They’re certainly part of the mix. But nobody and no group designs and controls how towns and cities evolve. They emerge, and continue to evolve and emerge over time. Some try to plan and design them, and that goes into the mix too. But there is no master plan. The town or city evolves. Towns and cities are the way the world solved the problem of allowing humans to live together, while retaining as much individual autonomy as possible. Think about how you live in a street with a whole group of people, many of whom you may not even know. It just kinda works. Life is relatively peaceful, most of the time. But nobody is designing that life or governing it. We all individually and collectively kind of mesh. What’s the magic that makes this work? I’m going to post more about that. It’s one of the most amazing stories in the world.
