Teachers are thought of as people who put knowledge in peoples’ heads, like you put fuel in a car. That’s not their actual job. Their job is what holds all of society together. They take a classroom full of people who would otherwise interact in the way you see in a playground, and slowly introduce knowledge into their lives to create a new way of being social. They teach society how to use knowledge to steer what it does. They socialise knowledge, is another way of putting it. They teach society how to act. Without them society becomes the playground, full of bullies and social status games, decoupled from the knowledge that makes societies progress. Hat tip to Kellie and Amy and Amanda and Natalie and Chelsea and every other teacher I know. I see what you do.
