I decided to catch up on Doctor Who by watching the last series. With the exception of maybe 1-2 episodes, it was appalling. But popular with some of the social media crowd, for whom it was mostly written. The show has become a vehicle for identity politics. And no, it’s not just ‘woke’, I refuse to play any of those games. It’s a faithful rendition of the culture we’re currently living. The fight for identity, which is the fight for social status. Innumerable references to the Doctor being gay, and of course he was now black too, after immediately previously being a woman for the first time. In the finale a team of wheelchair-bound helpers openly discussed ‘ableist’ topics. And everybody made interminably long, emotional speeches about everything. Excruciatingly earnest boredom. As a culture we’re obsessed with identity now. That happened because we no longer have a functioning status hierarchy to regulate status in societies, so it’s on for young and old to try to get to the top of that tree.
