I like walking on roads when they're empty. Part of it is to reclaim the space from vehicles. But it's also because of one property they have that I find interesting. Road space is unbounded space. The function of a road is always to go somewhere else. Put a road anywhere - in a town, or countryside - and you immediately add a a space permanently at odds with its surroundings. You can feel that directly walking on a road, the clash of the two types of space.
