Macca taps into the ‘Big Lap’ culture. Where travel becomes an accumulation of places, like collecting stamps. I’ve been everywhere man, the old song. It all seems a bit phoney and desperate, as if you can somehow repair our lack of connection to place, by accumulating more and more places. I still think our obsession with travel is like a desperation, trying to fill a void that is our culture. Nowhere people, people of no-place, the grass is always greener somewhere else. We experience the world as a big map, we consume other places that people have made beautiful, because we’ve forgotten how to do that to our own spaces. Children of empire, empire was the big passion to accumulate places. It hasn’t left us.
