Redwood Materials, a company headed by one of the engineers who set up Tesla, takes old car batteries and stands them up in the middle of the desert, linking them and controlling them with software. This creates massive storage for the grid. Within only 3-4 years, they estimate they could provide half of the energy storage needed by the entire US grid, just using old EV car batteries in this way. Old EV batteries still have loads of life in them, before they’re recycled and turned into new car batteries. Some use them as home batteries after they’re finished life as a car battery.
