I saw a prominent person say the other day that “aborigines lived in balance with nature for thousands of years.” They didn’t, nobody ever has, nature is not balanced, nature is not even a thing. To me it’s interesting that it’s exactly the same belief that drives free market thinking, that there’s this thing called a market, which will naturally balance itself if you leave it alone. How’s that for strange bedfellows. Balance is something you have to produce, it takes work and thought. Lots of ‘holistic’ thinking forgets this too I think, it has the same fantasy of balance, doesn’t matter where it’s used. All of it just replaces God, who was the old ‘balance’ regulating things, with a new magical balancing thing. Ultimately it’s a cop-out way of not taking responsibility for making things work.
