There's a desperation about the 'big lap' I think. A dream of many Australians. As if the more we see of the country, the more we somehow understand it. To me it's a last-gasp leftover from our imperial past, empires of course defined themselves by the places they accumulated (I've been everywhere, man; Macca's Australia All Over etc.). Ask us what 'Australia' is and the best we can do is a map, which we drive around inside.
