We cycle half of our closest friends roughly every 7 years. Friendship is fascinating, it's something that is highly dependent on circumstances and stages of life, and friendships are what help us move through those stages. They usually have an expiration date. One of the reasons Proust was underwhelmed by friendship was because of this - that's it's very often more a means to an end than a deep, lasting relationship.
