The people and animals in this photograph are all long dead? Yes and no. For example, some of them is in this photograph, some of who they are has been 'captured' here and lives on with every new viewer. You could say it's just a representation of them, but what does that even mean? Some part of them was detachable from their 'physical' body and able to be 'captured'. One of the reasons aboriginal peoples often don't like images of the dead. Another example, when they realised a few scribbles on a piece of paper from the 19th century could be re-activated to play the first ever recorded sound (https://youtu.be/7Vqvq-f-UtU), even though it was just scribbles on paper. We're not either alive or dead, we're more or less active or virtual. Everybody who has ever lived is still virtually with us, and then at times even made actual, as in this photograph, to some degree.
