Speaking to a 20-something this week about why they weren't following the social restrictions. "My age group doesn't die of this". It all comes back to this graph. People overwhelmingly read it as individuals - what is 'my' chance of dying here? The secret to beating a pandemic is to get people to read it from the perspective of the *group* - society. That's tough, our most common understanding of acting together is all based on emotion - shared feelings. Why we do symbolic stuff like all clap for emergency services, or bushfire appeals, or post "I'm with [insert cause]" memes. We have very limited understanding of groups beyond that.
