Up to 70% of road accidents are caused by human error. Humans love to believe they're brilliant drivers, but no human can ever drive (or fly) as accurately or consistently as a machine. There's no need to go as far as replacing the driver, like with planes we just need the technology to carry a lot of the load. My car already does it. I've seen cars described as 'driver's cars'. Meaning basically a road-registered race car. Something 'with 3 pedals', and 'a stick' (i.e. manual gear shift). It's very telling, that people who believe that bullshit see the road as a racetrack. It's how they drive too. Good driving is nothing to do with that, at all. It's about driving in a way that takes maximum account of everybody else on the road. Not just to be safe, but because that also improves traffic flow. Leaving that to individual drivers will ALWAYS fail. It's why commercial pilots are not allowed to fly planes most of the time they're in the air. Good flying isn't about acrobatics or getting maximum speed through a corner. It's about getting people there safely, and in the optimum time, taking account of everything else in the air. Machines doing most of the work do that much better, and always will.
