There are very few towns, no matter how small or remote, that didn't make their first priority the building of a church. I want to understand why it was so important to us once to do this. Were we just silly 'believers' back then? Nope. I think that church was a foundational act in establishing our places. A sacred centre to our towns, that grounded us by making something eternal the lynchpin of our daily life. What's replaced this? Nothing. Homes are now 'locations' to be traded for capital gains. Towns are now individuals pursuing an eternal present, an individual 'lifestyle'. Nothing draws that town together any more in a sacred way, to partake of something eternal. We have 'events', temporary fun where we gather as a group to enrich our individual lifestyles. It's not the same. Want to understand aboriginal people? We need to learn again what 'sacred' might mean, as a description of a place.
