Text on a page looks like shadows. Not a metaphor I don't think, text is the highly processed shadows of things themselves, that text talks about. Darkness and light. The word 'tree' doesn't look like the shadow of a tree. But it did in the beginning. Knowledge is in the world, not in our heads.
