America has always been snake oil oligarchs overlaid upon a pious small-town fundamentalist Puritanism. It was the latter that created the former, Puritans wanted to avoid State control of their lives (why they were booted out of Europe), so the culture from Day 1 was hostile to institutions. This in turn led to free rein to every grifter who wants to make a fortune. It’s a frontier, settlers culture that never matured.
