Mt Arthur coal mine, in the Hunter Valley. To file under ‘windmills spoil the view’. Some facts about it, a window into the industry. - BHP owns it, and in recent years all of its coal has gone offshore - it’s Australia’s largest coal mine - BHP has been trying to sell it for 4 years. Nobody will buy it. - In the early 2000s, it was valued at $2 billion. BHP now values it at negative $200 million. It will pay somebody to take it. Coal is dead. Coal mining towns are therefore also dead, unless they have different work lined up.
