The Shetland Islands for decades has been powered by diesel generators, the top picture. In the middle of 2024, it will shift to being powered entirely by wind. So much wind power that they will export nearly 10 times as much electricity as they use themselves, back to the Scottish mainland. The Shetland Islands Council drove this change themselves, in partnership with wind engineering companies.
