Here’s my vote for why people like Trump and climate change deniers win. It’s a classic example of how the people who want the world to be different see the people they need to convince as simply stupid. How far do you think that’ll get them, in changing those peoples’ minds? The climate change debacle is as much about the complete failure of science education and of scientists to engage well in public debates, as it is about oil companies and Trump. The bad guys respected people enough to know they had to PERSUADE them of their position. And that’s what they’ve been doing, while the other side just calls everybody stupid and hopes for the best.
