What made Eddie Van Halen the best rock guitar god of our era was that he was the greatest musician of all the rock guitar gods. Others would try to play flashier things, but that’s like the Eveready Bunny musically. Sometimes you need to dig into little heard things to hear the musicality of EVH. Like this backing riff from Mean Streets, the GROOVE. You might hear this and think ‘hard rock’ or even ‘heavy metal’. Nah, it was pure groove. Nasty.
