The Space Shuttle weighed over 2000 tonnes. To escape Earth’s gravity, it had to reach speeds of over 40,000 km/h, going straight up. Imagine the force needed to propel something that weighs more than 2000 tonnes, straight up, at 40,000 km/h. It’s one of the reasons I’ve never been the guy who tinkers with engines. They’re boring, weak technology.
