DH Lawrence, himself a teacher, was scathing about the idea of universal education. His reasoning was that only a handful of people are suited for what we call more ‘academic’ type work, and forcing all kids to sit through it would fundamentally undermine respect for that knowledge in society. Are we seeing that right now, in our populist democracies, with millions in outright rebellion against expertise?
