Roads are public infrastructure. They shouldn’t be user-pays. Imagine saying people should pay at the front door of the hospital, or to get into school every day. Fuel excise doesn’t pay for roads. How many times does that need to be pointed out? If they want to pay for more road maintenance, cancel the diesel fuel rebate. Billions every year. Also making the tax distance-based targets the poorest Australians, who have to drive the longest distances in their commutes. It’s just idiocy in every way. Another ‘public policy’ that actually began as an idiot social media meme, when petrolheads claimed EV drivers were freeloading and not paying for roads.
