I watched most of the funeral on replay this morning. What strikes me about royal ceremonies is how little they're about the individuals occupying the roles. Almost nothing about Philip the man in today's funeral. This is a good thing. Custom and tradition are the way people and wisdom from across centuries act still in the present. Even watching the event you could feel how no individual was really running things, it was centuries of traditions and knowledge guiding present-day individuals.
