As a kid I still remember shops being closed both Saturday afternoons and Sundays. You needed to get cash out on a Friday to get you through the weekend. Partly this was the religious Sabbath still shaping society, partly action by unions. Saturday afternoon trading in NSW began only in 1984. Sunday trading began only in 1992. Are we better for it? The hysteria over 'lockdowns' suggests to me that we're now so well domesticated by work that we can't tolerate even the smallest break to our busy routines. Heathen wage slaves. Religion is much smarter than we realise. Know what would be great for our mental health? Compulsory rest days built back into our weeks. 3 of them would be a good start, let's have a 4-day working week.
