I'd qualify this. We're ALL 'idiots', outside the areas we actually know something about. What social media did was let everybody's opinion on things they know nothing about suddenly have real power. That's literally centuries of human progress, of setting up hierarchies of knowledge rather than opinion, thrown into reverse. Tell a plumber how to do his or her job, and they'll tell you to f-off. For good reason. But that same plumber will happily tell you why climate change is crap, why renewables and EVs are a con, why vaccination kills you, etc. And will join social media groups who believe the same absolute crap, and become powerful.
