Today huge crowds gather mostly to see gigs. Why I call us a gig culture. But in 1851, they gathered at the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, London, to see the wonders of modern science and technology, and how they would change the world. 6 million Britons rushed to the Crystal Palace, itself a marvel of engineering at the time, to see the exhibition, in only a matter of months. That was a third of the entire population. Makes Tay Tay look like a garden party. You can make adult, exciting things the things that go viral in a society. The Victorians knew how. We have no idea. We repeat the same adolescent rituals of our teen years throughout life, into people’s 80s and beyond. Today if you did this, social media would already have invented 15 bullshit fake stories to attack all of the scientific and engineering marvels. Today China and the rest of Asia is living this other sort of revolution, like the Victorians did. We in the West are perpetual teens who build nothing, wallow in our emotions and feelings, and bitch and moan and complain on the socials about every tiny thing. Promoting ourselves to try to gain some identity and status in the melee.
