If you’ve never watched Rumpole, it’s not too late to start. Rumpole is like the Yes Minister of Law, a hugely entertaining chance for people to learn how ancient institutions actually work in practice, the institutions that give us happy and peaceful lives. One of the great episodes was titled Rumpole at Sea, as Rumpole and his wife take a cruise and a woman goes missing. It was a genius plot by John Mortimer (himself a barrister), because it allowed the intersection of the law and the public to be explored in hilarious and profound ways. Messages desperately needed in our time. Couple of small snippets below.
