A balanced-arm lamp. Sometimes called a floating arm lamp. Designed so that the force of gravity is always exactly balanced by the tension of the springs, so that the lamp can be put in any position without effort and stay there without effort. This is how our body works too, it suspends us effortlessly in space in whatever position we like, provided we're not off balance. Maybe a majority of people don't know this and therefore don't float. Thus, as I often say. We can float. ('Floating' arm lamp.) If we know how to use our body properly.
