Australians see government as a service provider. Something to make sure the basic infrastructure of society is in place, working and affordable. I think it’s a very healthy framework for government, and have actually wondered if a political party focused on infrastructure (of all kinds) would do well here. In many other countries on the other hand this issue is more about individual freedom versus government. The sort of rubbish idea ultra conservatives try to introduce into Australian politics too. Identity politics. As if the State were some separate evil social actor. I don’t think it’s a surprise that many behind this narrative push have deep, conservative religious backgrounds, with a history of State versus Church battles.
