I'm convinced our war on darkness (electric light, daylight saving etc.) is changing who we are, in bad ways. There was a time when sunset brought on darkness even in the home, with candles or lanterns the only light. A person would trundle off to bed in a little cocoon of golden light, navigating through a wider spooky darkness. These experiences have profound impacts on our biology and psychology, life is much more nuanced when you mix darkness with it. Maybe one of the reasons people are so polarised in their views is that they've lost the 'shades' in their thinking. I don't think that's just a metaphor, we're maybe hyper-stimulated by all that light.
