Lots of talk about how the Catholic Church is a toxic institution, with the recent child abuse scandals. It got me to thinking, on that measure, probably the most toxic institution in the world is the family. The overwhelming majority of child sexual abuse happens in families. On top of that, the overwhelming majority of violence against women also occurs in families. Not for everybody, but for a significant minority. And the scale would dwarf what happens in churches.
