Probably the fastest way to improve social media is to turn off comments on posts. Not for personal things among friends, but for public-focused posts, from government, business and others. That function stems from the same belief that it’s more democratic to enable that. It’s really not, it just provides a platform for a small number of people with a grievance to use your post as a platform to ‘perform’ their grievance, to try to boost their own social status. For example comments are turned off on the streams of Council meetings. When they were on it was an open sewer of abuse and complaint. Usually from the same tiny number of people, pretending to speak for ’the community’. Nobody needs other peoples’ opinions on public matters, they’re mostly just status posturing.
