The big modernist revival in homes in the last couple of decades - open plan everywhere, everything white and chrome and glassy and boxy, complete saturation with light, lots of hard floors with exhausting echoes etc. is (for me) as boring as modernism was when it was first invented. It's all about visuals and not much about the visceral, about how things look rather than how they really feel. Sometimes it's the spaces that are purely functional that avoid that sort of self-consciousness. Like old workshops, haberdasheries, general stores, sheds. Spaces that feel less like a showroom and more embracing and intimate.
