One of the things keepers of slaves and domestic servants discovered was that they introduced all sorts of obligations and responsibilities for owners. They had to be looked after as well as ordered to work. This shift from possession to mutual obligation is likely how society developed. The same happens with our technologies, which we take to be our servants, but which introduce increasing numbers of obligations for us. It's the same process.
