CATL is the world’s biggest producer of lithium-ion batteries. This week it did something huge. It announced its new batteries have a storage capacity of 0.5 kWh per kg. That’s about double existing batteries. This will mean EVs can now easily have a range of 1000km, with no added weight. Battery technology is advancing at light speed, and costs are plummeting. In the meantime petrol and diesel clunkers reached their peak efficiency 150 years ago.
