Cultures that travel obsessively love to call themselves ‘nomads’. They’re nothing like nomads, nomads move to survive. Meanwhile travel cultures invest trillions in their own homes, and in ‘strong borders’ to stop others wandering nomadically through their own countries. Travel cultures are imperial cultures, and their travel is the old ‘Grand Tour’ aristocratic families sent their boys on, when they came of age. To ‘see’ the world, like everybody else’s home is a theme park for our enjoyment.
