Study our own culture. You could once go to major sporting events for the love of the sport itself, and celebrate a ‘good game’, no matter who won. And then kidult culture took over, and now the rivalry in sport is existential. Peoples’ identities are bound up in their favourite team or sportsperson winning. That’s teen culture, taking over adult culture again. This year’s F1 championship has been a perfect example. Yes Piastri has been treated appallingly, mostly again because of the same team sports culture within the team and formula itself. But the fans are something else, the racing has become just a platform for their identity games. Even at the races, entire crowds decked out in the merch of their favourite team. Death threats, even, when fans are displeased. I want to live in a grown-up world again. It won’t happen in my lifetime.
