Two of my favourites, travel and social media. Most travel seems to be about saying ‘here’s me, at this cool place.’ It’s not really about being there, it’s about being there to show others back home that you’re there. Like the old imperial explorations, which were motivated entirely by what people brought back, we’re still children of empire and don’t even see it. Still conquering the world, now with cameras in phones. That destroys the places we visit even faster than colonial invasion.
