NBN came and finished connecting my street last weekend. What struck me was that every worker was young and obviously from India, and they really knew their stuff, fantastic to watch them. And it made me think how stupid we are as a society, to be obsessed with immigration. Our society is very old, and our biggest crisis may be not enough young workers to support the oldies. Every great wave of immigration to Australia has enormously expanded the diversity and colour of Australian life, and made us far richer. And yet our biggest political issue is still paranoia about immigration. I'll re-post this image, which to me sums up just about every social trend in Australia right now. Old, scared and reactionary. ScoMo's Australia.
