How often are real-life situations really between what’s good and bad? Hardly ever in my experience. In real life we evaluate everything we do, what brand of cheese to buy, what to let our kids watch, whether to buy a clothes dryer, an electric or diesel or petrol car etc. Moralism I see as an attempt to extract general principles out of that vast everyday evaluating process. I’m yet to find an example of it that isn’t just one person trying to impose their evaluations on others. Some say that’s cynical and creates ‘moral relativism’ - anything goes. But not at all I don’t think, it replaces morality with evaluation, which we all do, all the time, in very sophisticated ways.
