“There is a growing consensus that the democratic model developed over the past century is in trouble, but there is less clarity about why people are so disenchanted with their democracies.” Because democracy as we conceive it never existed. It can’t exist, it’s impossible. Groups of people form networked hierarchies aligned around leaders or influencers. They follow, they imitate/emulate. Not because they’re sheep, but because there is no alternative. No group of whatever size has a collective mind, in the way ‘the people’ suggests. This continuing collapse of democracies is the collapse of that fantasy. https://www.eiu.com/n/campaigns/democracy-index-2024/
